The terms carbon neutral and net zero emissions can be used interchangeably. The meaning of both is that carbon emissions by a company, business, product or other source are balanced out with an equivalent carbon savings elsewhere, or by simply eliminating carbon emissions altogether. Carbon neutral and net zero emissions mean that fossil fuels are phased out and energy efficient and renewable energy complements measures to bring down emissions to help achieve ecological balance.

There are a broad spectrum of activities that result in carbon emissions such as ending polluting activity, installing energy-efficient equipment, sourcing recycled materials or purchasing renewable energy.

The best practice is always to avoid or reduce carbon emissions in the first place.
